What is the general view of using the formula :
transferrin (g/L) x 22.75 = TIBC (umol/L)
Are there any pitfalls/special cases ?
My view is that we should be watching out for elevated ferritins and
concurrent IBC saturations as markers of haemachromatosis.
With best wishes
Richard

Subject: Iron-binding capacity or transferrin?
I would be grateful to get some idea of how many labs link an iron assay
with iron-binding capacity and how many with a transferrin assay. We use
the latter, much to the chagrin of our clinical users!

I will summarise the results that I receive in a further message at a future
date.
