We see very few oriental women in our screening programme, but in a study we
did in 1993 (unpublished except as part of a PhD thesis) we analysed data on
70 "orientals" from a total of 14561 screens:
Figures are: without weight adjustment (median MoM and 95%CI), with weight
adjustment (median MoM and 95%CI).
AFP
Oriental 1.14(1.05-1.24) 0.97(0.90-1.05)
uE3
Oriental 1.24(1.11-1.38) 1.17(1.05-1.30)
total-hCG
Oriental 1.12(0.98-1.28) 1.31(1.15-1.50)
As you can see there is a significant difference which,
after weight adjustment, disappeared for AFP, reduced for uE3, and increased
for hCG. If you are using total hCG and AFP (as most people are) and not
adjusting the MoM for oriental origin, you are probably overestimating risk.
However, I do not know how transferrable this data is, and 70 is quite a
small data set.
The only other data I am aware of are from Reddy,S.B. and Reddy,A.S. (1990):
Relation between maternal weight and serum alpha-fetoprotein concentration
in Oriental and Caucasian women. Am J Hum Genet 46 (supplement) A245:
Comparing MoMs in 561 Oriental and 227 Caucasian women, stratified by weight
and found no difference in AFP.
I would be most interested to see any other data people have.

Subject: Down's screens in Japanese women
Does anyone have any information on AFP/hCG MoMs in Japanese as opposed to
Caucasian women?
We have a lady with a 1 in 54 risk of Down's on our medians, who wants to
know what the influence of her ethnicity is likely to be.
Any assistance gratefully received!
