At the Jewish General we are looking at offering assays relative to the
redox state of patients. We have a very active research group who work in
the separate fields of nutrition, oncology, iron and memory/geriatrics who
use these assays for research purposes. We do not anticipate a clinical need
for several years. There have not, as yet, been adaquate clinical trials. We
are looking at bringing the assays to the levels required for a clinical
laboratory. This is no small task as the standards are somewhat lacking.

Subject: Measurement of Total or Specific Antioxidants
Is the measurement of antioxidants used anywhere in
hospital laboratories in the UK to assess the progress
in any clinical diseases?
There appears to be a plethora of advertisements (on
the internet and in health magazines in Spain)on the
benefits of antioxidant supplements. Also I am
involved in a little research (mainly published
literature).
There was a recent report on a large clinical trial
(lancet 2002,360,pp 23-33) suggesting that supplements
over a 5yr period had no beneficial effect on the any
major diseases e.g. heart disease or cancers.
It appears that we are no further forward than we
were in 1998, when a review article by F.P Woodford
and T.P Whitehead was published in the Annals,
suggesting further research was needed.
Does anyone in have any views on this wide subject,
other than, as it's the festive season, a good bottle
of red wine will do me good.
