Hello Robert,
I can find you references on the Thule whalebone structures (Saville and
McCartney). More locally there are incidences of whale bone incorporated into
structures in scotland, most famously Skara Brae (whale bone rafters and a
proposed whale skull roof) also other structural uses with whale door sockets
and in the western isles whalebone used as the occasional substitute for stone -
incorporating 'elements of the sea' into the prehistoric and historic islanders
homes.
I have a paper in IJO 2002 on whales which has some of these references in and
generally dicusses use of whale bone in architecture. I shall send you a copy
separately.

Dear All
Does anybody know of anything written on the use of bones in architecture?
I am thinking specifically of the use of animals bones as decorative, or
non-structural elements in buildings, although anything on the subject
(including whalebone houses) would be most useful.
Don't be shy: I'm desperate!
