Virtual learning environments for effective learning in art and design
workshop leader: Julia Gaimster

Background
This workshop looks at the pedagogical and practical issues involved in the
use of vles in art and design. It will cover ways of integrating images
into your site effectively and using some of the tools to support
collaborative and independent learning.
Participants
The workshop will be of interest to those who are considering using a
virtual learning environment or those who have been using one but wish to
do so more effectively.
Aims
Participants will gain an understanding some of the pedagogical and
practical issues in using vles to support teaching and learning in art and
design.
Advanced features and techniques for using and displaying information to
support teaching and learning will be covered.
Outcomes
Participants will be able to:
Understand the pedagogical issues involved in using some of the features
offered by vles
Use HTML to create effective announcements
Add content using a range of formats including images and PowerPoint
presentations
Set up and manage groups
Create and organise links
Use discussion forums effectively
Create online assessments and grade sheets
Process
The workshop will include demonstrations and practical sessions. The vle
used for this workshop is Blackboard however many of the concepts are
relevant to other platforms. No technical skills are required but
participants should be familiar with the use of a keyboard and mouse and
knowledge of basic computer functions such as cut and paste would be an
advantage. Participants will receive relevant reference materials and a
bibliography.
About the workshop leader
Julia Gaimster is a principal lecturer in fashion design and technology at
the London College of Fashion and a member of the London Institute
Technology in Learning Environments group. She has extensive experience in
the design and delivery of staff development workshops in the use of
technology to support teaching and learning and has published several
research papers in the field.
