Widening students' sensitivities: supporting learning strategies by
using the environment
Outline
This workshop introduces some alternative ways to approach visual
research, which will enable you to formulate or re-evaluate your
strategies for curriculum delivery. Examples to be discussed have
been tested to work alongside visual studies programmes and are seen
as an extension rather than a replacement to established drawing
conventions.
You will be introduced to and explore the various practices used in
resource based learning (RBL) which because the term is widely
defined by teachers and lecturers, this workshop will concentrate on
the use of "environment" as a focus for discussion.
The workshop is designed to act as a catalyst, promoting discussion
on curriculum development with reference to using "off site"
activities to stimulate learning. The workshop looks at the use of
"image" as a notation for recording experiences and perceptions,
emphasising the importance of this in relation to research.
Aims
The programme aims to introduce you to some new approaches and to
revisit some traditional uses of resource based learning (RBL) as a
vehicle to:
* help you and your team plan and develop the curriculum in using
strategies to incorporate environmental resources alongside
traditional drawing research methodologies
*provide students with a framework in which they can freely explore
and build on the expression of their ideas, feelings and reactions in
response to both, perceptual or conceptual experiences
*encourage students to discover and gain an understanding of the
visual qualities and communication potential offered by media
and materials
*help students learn about the limitations in current design conventions
*encourage students to explore alternative approaches to problem solving
*to support students in developing confidence and establishing
individuality in their work
About the work shop leader
Mike Bradshaw has worked as both a designer and an educator for over
twenty years and through this experience has developed new courses
and strategies to resensitise students to the potential of using the
environment as a resource in their work. He is currently working on
an extension to 'Visual Thinking,' a research project which defines
the process of taking visual conception to physical output and its
'interpretation' through drawing. This project has generated three
Professional Development Qualifications which will form part of the
National pilot for Professional Development Awards to be run during
2001 to 2003.
