Just wanted to add my agreement to Ken's point. No need to
apologise Glenn!
The relationship between research and practice is often vague and
problematic. As Pippa Ashton has pointed out, it is often
difficult to get practitioners to immerse themselves in academic
research, though from the perspective of the academy we feel that
we have a lot to offer for the improvement of practice. But we
need to understand more of what practice requires of us. That
kind of relationship, which seems so well embedded in some other
domains, is almost wholly missing from design. There are of
course some clear exceptions.
At Common Ground (I will stop ranting about this conference one
of these days) we did try to get more practitioners to present
papers. We had some success, with a very small number coming from
consultancies, and a few more from industry. There were very
few practitioners in the audience though.
One of the big challenges that design research will face, as we
develop the field, is forming that 2 way link between research
and practice that will lead to improving practice.
