Point of information: Dyson saw existing industrial-scale cyclone
cleaners, and his innovation was to make a small and portable version for
domestic use. In your terms therefore, he kept the concept and the
function, but moved the context.
The discussion is mirroring the political discussion about the purpose,
and hence definition, of "higher" education. How should we distinguish
research, development, product design and marketing? *All* of which are
stages in moving "science" into "society." And how do we avoid placing
value judgments on the stages?
