One approach that has had quite a lot of time devoted to it is
concerned with learning styles arising from personality and the
matching or mismatching of teaching and learning.
There was a very large study of engineering students in the USA a
few years ago, based on the MBTI. Both students and their
teachers were assessed. This demonstrated to me that the
approach to teaching in engineering may be quite different to the
approach to design teaching (in art and design) and that this may
arise primarily from the distinct personal preferences of
teachers.
Jason, if you would like to contact me offline I will provide
some references to the studies that I know of.
