The following message was submitted by [log in to unmask] to the
LIS-UKOLUG
list at JISCMAIL.AC.UK. It is being forwarded to you for verification
because
the message has been identified as a possible "spam", that is, an
advertisement
or other unsolicited material sent to large numbers of mailing lists
with no
consideration for whether or not the material is appropriate for the
lists it
is being sent to. A single "spam" can result in the delivery of
millions of
unwanted e-mail messages worldwide, costing the victims and service
providers a
total of several hundred thousand dollars. The cost to the spammer is
usually
under five dollars. To be effective, a counter-measure must neutralize
the spam
within the first five minutes. Consequently, there is no time for
all the
LISTSERV servers to compare notes with each other before acting,
and some
legitimate postings may be intercepted erroneously. If this is the
case, simply
forward this message back to the list with an explanatory note.

Subject: New UKOLUG meetings
Reply-to: [log in to unmask]

Dear All

Apologies for cross posting. There are several new courses
now being organised by the UK Online User Group

1. Managing your Electronic Resources and Services
Tuesday, 28 May 2002, 0930 - 1630
Sheffield Hallam
University

This meeting will address the range of issues which relate to managing
a collection of electronic resources: including access, budgeting,
evaluation and selection, licensing, marketing, measuring usage, and
supporting users. The meeting will be a mixture of presentations and
discussion.

Presented by:
Alison McNab, Collections Manager, JISC
Frank Norman, Librarian, National Institute for Medical Research, Mill
Hill, London Ian Winship, Electronic Services Manager, Northumbria
University

2. Intranet Management
Wednesday 22nd May 2002, 0930 - 1630
Netskills, University of Newcastle

Many organisations have some form of Intranet, and are now looking at
how best to develop their intranet to provide a wider range of
content. The objective of this seminar is to highlight the
opportunities and issues that arise in building on an existing
intranet, covering information content, technology and management
topics. Particular attention will be paid to the specification and
selection of content management software, and to justifying and
managing intranets in not-for-profit organisations and the public
sector

The course is being run by Martin White, Managing Director of Intranet
Focus Ltd (www.intranetfocus.com)

3. Introduction to reference management software
Tuesday 2 July 2002, 0930 - 1630
John Rylands Library, University of Manchester

Reference management software is having an increasingly important role
to play for researchers and information professionals need to keep
abreast of the features, functions and capabilities of the leading
products on the market. The course aims to provide an overview of
reference management software, outlines key issues surrounding use and
provide an opportunity to explore a number of key packages

4. Raise the Profile of your Information Service!
Exploiting Content: Raising the Profile of your LIS in the Informed
Organisation
Tuesday, 23rd July 2002, 09.30 - 16.15
Novartis Foundation, 41 Portland Place, London, W1N 4BN

Information is the stock-in-trade of information professionals. The
full potential of free and commercial sources of information often
goes untapped when they can be put to unanticipated uses - often with
minimal skill and effort. Rewards can outweigh even modest initial
training, resource or learning costs. An LIS needs to be at the heart
of its organisation demonstrating relevance and value-for-money. This
course centres on raising the LIS profile by using simple desktop
tools to produce quality in-house publications (newsletters,
bulletins, current awareness lists etc.). The Course focuses on
producing an organisational newsletter. Targeting markets, acquiring
content, style and layout, editing issues, offline and online
dissemination issues will all be covered. Examples of good practice
will also be discussed. In addition, both more traditional and
cutting-edge approaches to raising the LIS profile within the
organisation will be reviewed.
