Global Vision International (GVI) is a non-political, non-religious
organisation, which specialises in providing Overseas Expeditions,
Research Projects, and Independent Voluntary Work Opportunities to the
general public. Through its alliance with aid reliant environmental
organisations throughout the world, GVI Volunteers fulfill a critical void
in the fields of environmental research, conservation, education and
community development.
“Global Vision International promotes sustainable solutions for a rapidly
changing world by matching you, the general public, with international
environmentalists, researchers and pioneering educators.”
GVI runs support expeditions to worthwhile projects all over the world and
currently has placements available in: Ecuador, South Africa, Nepal,
China, Alaska, Panama, Thailand, Uganda and New Zealand.
No previous experience is necessary, as full training is given, but we are
particularly interested in recruiting people from the fields of
environmental sciences, zoology, biology and other related areas.
Three programmes of particular interest are as follows:
Karongwe Game Reserve, South Africa
Since June 2000 GVI has been running a research expedition on Karongwe
Game Reserve in conjunction with The Karongwe Ecological Research
Institute (KERI) and the University of Natal. The aim of this research is
to determine the impact of reintroduced mammals on the game reserve.
Volunteers will be assisting with the research on predator/prey
interactions, elephant impact surveys, reserve mapping and wild dog
breeding programmes.
Santa Junin Reserve, Ecuador
September 2002 saw the launch of a new project in conjunction with
Rainforest Concern, a leading rainforest protection charity. The Santa
Junin reserve is located in the foothills of the Andes, and from here the
Volunteers will build research bases, liaise with local communities to
establish working protocols and conduct pilot biodiversity studies
investigating the local flora and fauna. With an estimated 2000 plant
species, 300 bird species and a large variety of mammal species within the
reserve, many of which are endangered, there is an urgent need for
environmental assessment.
South African National Parks Internship
Working in conjunction with the South African National Parks Board GVI is
seeking committed, independent and enthusiastic Volunteers to work at the
18 National Parks of South Africa. They will undertake and develop
environmental education and community development projects aimed at
integrating the local communities in conservation efforts and development
programmes.
Volunteers will be working alongside social ecologists on various projects
in and around parks which include the world renowned Kruger National
Park. (NB: There is a selection process for this internship, and all
Volunteers must be over 21).
