Dear list member,
Professor William Scott <mailto:[log in to unmask]> gave his
inaugural lecture, Sustainability and Learning: what role for the
curriculum?, at the University of Bath on 25th April 2002.
Summary: The lecture examines arguments for sustainable development and
explores their implications for learning. It argues: [i] that the
curriculum can help prepare for the learning that will be needed over
time by individuals and institutions, both as a resource for living, and
for further learning; [ii] that although we need education to help us
understand sustainability, because our knowledge of the natural
environment is imperfect and characterised by risk, there are problems
in using educational interventions as levers for particular forms of
social change; and [iii] despite there being no single way of learning
about sustainability, there are strong grounds for working in schools
through subject teaching. The lecture ends by arguing that, because
civil society is crucial to achieving sustainability, it is in all our
interests that schools and teachers become openly engaged in the issues
and arguments.
