This consultation paper on specialised pathology is clearly an
attempt to formalise the ad hoc arrangements that we have for
providing specialist tests and also to ensure that funding
arrangements do not starve specialist laboratories out of existence.
As the director of an SAS laboratory, I am concerned about the
approach to staff training. Certainly there is a need for all staff to
maintain a general awareness of their specialty for CPD. However,
there does not seem to be an understanding of the need to train our
own specialists. Merely rotating through specialty areas is not
enough to gain sufficient in-depth experience. The paper raises the
concept of "importing scientists". This is reminiscent of the approach
of stripping nurses and cardiac surgeons out of poorer countries and
will not lead to a sustainable service and, moreover, removes the
focus of ambition from our own trainees.
