Background and Rationale
The numbers of research students in the fields of art, design and
communication have, until recently, been relatively small. Since
1990, however, there has been a steady increase in numbers and, more
recently, interest in research degrees in art and design has grown
significantly. The major restriction on greater growth has been the
number of suitably qualified research degrees supervisors in the
relevant fields. Many institutions have given considerable attention
to the proper training and development of research degree
supervisors.
Participants
This course is an introduction to the requirements of research
supervision for new and intending research supervisors.
Aims
The course aims to provide a general introduction to the work
involved in supervising research students in the fields of art,
design and communication. The day will provide an opportunity to
work in groups on relevant case study material, guided by an
experienced facilitator. The case study material employed will be
appropriate to supervision in the relevant fields. Groups will be
asked to consider issues raised by the case studies and make oral
feedback presentations to the main group.
Outcomes
At the end of the programme participants will have gained some
insights into the supervision process and the particular requirements
of research degree supervision in art, design and communication.
They will have had the opportunity to share good practice with
colleagues from other institutions with specialisms in art and design.
Process
The course will consist of a mixture of formal presentations by
leading practitioners in art, design and communication and case study
work in small groups. The one-day programme will provide an equal
balance between these two elements.
