I think it was a great idea to start this "Who are you
guys" messages. It makes it more personal.
Anyway, I am an Austrian, studying a BA Film and Video
at Newport University, UK. I am interested in fiction
and documentaries, and I like films that have elements
of both commercial and "arthouse" movies (like Picnic
at Hanging Rock, 12 Monkeys and The Third Man). I am
just writing my dissertation on endings in filmic
narratives, and this was the actual reason to
subscribe to film philosophy. I chose this subject
because I am convinced that endings establish the
meaning of films, and they can be more powerful as the
entire film experience itself. The topic is quite
complex, so that I decided to base my work on "The
End" by Richard Neupert, and to look for gaps in his
study. I try to examine narrative filmic ends less in
terms of philosophy (since I am a filmmaker) that in
terms of cultural context and contemporary meanings. I
give examples of post-calssical Hollywood films (Blue
Velvet, 12 Monkeys), and non-Hollywood films (Picnic
at Hanging Rock) and try to find out why they end the
way they do. I am thinking of using Timothy Corrigan's
theory of illegibilty and spectacle in post-classical
Hollywood movies to explain their ends. For Picnic, I
will describe how the cultural and social context in
1975 shaped the film, and especially its ending (it
was an adaption, but I think the reason of Peter
Weir/Pat Lovell to make this movie with an open end
at that time is very significant).
Anyway, if any of you guys has any comments or ideas
on the topic, please let me know.
Catalin
