medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. December) is the feast day of:
Christiana (Nino) (d. c. 330) Christiana was held as a prisoner of war in
Georgia. During the years of her captivity she came to be acclaimed as a
model of faith, courage, and trust in God; she also possessed the gift of
miracles. According to tradition, she so impressed the Georgian royal
family that in the year 322 they and all their people converted to
Christianity.
Eusebius of Vercelli (d. 371?) Eusebius became the first bishop of
Vercelli in 340. He attended the synod of Milan in 355, and when he
refused to join in the condemnation of Athanasius of Alexandria was
banished by the emperor for seven years. Eusebius was only able to return
to his see in the reign of Julian the Apostate. Back in Vercelli, Eusebius
was an active opponent of Arianism. A later legend tells that he was
indeed stoned to death by Arian opponents. More prosaic accounts, however,
report that he died a natural death.
Paulos of Latros (d. 955) Paulos was a famous hermit in the Latros
mountains (Anatolia). He became noted as a counsellor and helper, and
finally had to flee from the streams of believers who sought him out. For
a time Paulos settled on the island of Patmos, but then returned to the
Latros. In the course of time, a great monastery (St. Paul's) evolved
around his hermitage.
