medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (8. December) is the feast day of:
The Conception of the Virgin Mary
Budoc (6th cent.) Budoc is a Celtic saint, venerated in Cornwall, Wales,
and Brittany. A vita of Maglorius that dates to c. 900 makes Budoc
Maglorius' successor as bishop of Dol. According to legend, Budoc was born
at sea---in a barrel. His mother had been falsely accused of adultery by
her jealous stepmother, who had her sealed into a barrel and thrown into
the sea. The mother reached Ireland safely and became washer-woman at a
monastery, where Budoc was brought up.
Valens of Avignon (d. 591) Valens, a married man, was elected bishop of
Avignon in the middle of the sixth century. He and his wife continued to
live together, after taking a vow of chastity. He seems to have been a
very good bishop, and won a reputation for piety.
Romarich (Romary) (d. 655) Romarich founded the great double monastery of
Remiremont in the Vogesen (France). He was an official at the court of the
Austrasian kings Theudebert II and Chlothar II, but in c. 600 entered the
monastery of Luxeuil. When Chlothar gave him a fortress, Romarich grounded
there first a nunnery, then a male monastery. At first he led it jointly
with his companion Amatus, but after A. died in 625 Romarich continued
alone.
Edith of Caestre (d. 819) Edith died, apparently as a martyr, at Caestra
(France) in 819, along with her sisters Alfrida and Sabina. The account of
their death is that they were killed by Vikings. Edith is still venerated
in the region around Arras.
