medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear List members,
The reason for St Andrew's status as patron of
Scotland surely derives from the presence of some of
his relics from 733 at his eponymous city on the coast
of Fife. A useful summary of the story of St Rule (or
Regulus) and his journey to Scotland can be found at
http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/home/scotland/standrew.html
As I understand it St Andrew became the patron of
Scotland both by reason of his status as an Apostle -
relics of whom were rare in north-western Europe - and
because the unified Kingdom of Scots was based in the
eastern lowlands rather than around St Columba's cult
centre of Iona (which had been a centre for early
royal burials).
The Bishops of St Andrews enjoyed a primacy amomngst
Scottish bishops from the eleventh or twelfth
centuries and on their seals described themselves as
"Episcopus Scottorum", analagous to the title of the
monarch, who was "Rex Scottorum". The primacy of the
see was, of course, confirmed when it was elevated to
Archiepiscopal rank in 1472.
By the late thirteenth century St Andrew was
definitely the patron saint of the kingdom - he
appears on the Great Seal of the Guardians of the
Realm during the interregnum of 1290-92, and, I am
told, on that of King Alexander III (1249-1286).
