medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Very interesting, although still somewhat mysterious! The question still
remains as to when and why Adam was depicted as "in Hebron formatus"?
On Joshua 14.15, the extant Greek texts do not reflect the problem: "But
the name of Xebrwn was the former city Argob; she/it is a metropolis of
the Enakeim. And the land ceased from war." Some codices of the Armenian
version add "and Adam the great one was sleeping in the midst of giants"
(et Adam magnus dormiens in medio gigantum), while Aquila reportedly has
(for "metropolis of the Enakeim") "this man was great," which is also
reflected in two hexaplaric cursives.
The traditional Hebrew (MT) has "And the name Hebron formerly was Qiryat
Arba the man [ADAM] great among Anaqim was he" (or similarly). As Jerome
recognized, in struggling to make some sense of it, "Arba" means four and
"Qiryat" can refer to a city/settlement. Fine. But what is the connection
to creation?!
