medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
In researching medieval translations of several saints from Hainaut
(southwest Belgium/northeast France), I find that when their coffins or
reliquaries were opened, their relics were divided, wrapped in deerskin and
shrouded, then put into new reliquaries; or left complete, wrapped in
deerskin and shroud and replaced in new reliquaries. Does anyone know if
there is a special reason for using deerskin, aside from its being readily
available, pliable and suitable for use as wrapping? I'll greatly
appreciate information about this custom.
