A colleague has just commented ...

"Here's a fascinating article about using electronic means to operate a
Reference library service - concentrating on the kinds of software that some
libraries have used to run a real-time interactive enquiry service, together
with a wish-list for how the software should really work, and why e-commerce
software is not entirely satisfactory - but also looking at the needs for
integrated electronic reference sources that can be annotated, and pointing
up XRefer as a start..."

It does make one stop & think ... can & should public libraries in the UK
aspire to get this far in integrating ICT into information service
provision? Some library services are already "on the move" in this
direction ... had we but an Earl-like opportunity to pull something together
in partnership with other library sectors would there be a stronger case for
pulling down funding and developing a working tool that we could all
"afford". How long can traditional approaches survive?
