medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (26. November) is the feast day of:
Petros I of Alexandria (d. 311) Petros became patriarch of Alexandria in
c. 300, and was martyred during the persecution of Maximinus Daja. Petros
was a scholar, and his writings were highly regarded for a long time. He
was one of the first writers to warn against the teachings of Arius.
Siricius (d. 399) Siricius was elected bishop of Rome in 384
(disappointing the hopes of Jerome). He is the first pope known to have
called himself "papa." He was buried in the catacomb of St. Priscilla.
Alyphios (7th cent.) Alyphios lived in the seventh century in Greece. At
first a deacon, at the age of 32 he became a hermit and spent the following
67 years standing on a pillar (the last few years of his life he spent
lying down). A double monastery under his leadership developed near the
pillar.
Conrad of Constance (d. 975) Conrad was born in c. 900, son of the count
of Altdorf. He became cathedral provost in Constance, and then bishop of
Constance. He held office for over 40 years, giving up much of his
personal property to pay for churches, hospices, and monasteries. Conrad
was canonized in 1123. His relics were thrown into Lake Constance during
the Reformation; only the head was rescued.
Nikon (d. c. 998) Nikon wwas a Greek monk, born in c. 930. For decades he
was active as a wandering preacher in Asia Minor, on Crete, and on the
Peloponnese. He founded a monastery neary Sparta, where he spent the last
years of his life.
Simeon of La Cava (d. 1141) From 1124 until his death, Simeon was bbot of
the Benedictine monastery of La Cava near Naples. During his lifetime the
monastery became famous, and Simeon himself was highly regarded by Pope
Innocent II and King Roger II. His cult was approved in 1928.
Delphine of Signe (blessed) (d. 1360) Delphine was born in 1283 in
Puy-Michel (France). She was married to Elzear (also a saint); when he
died, she gave all her possessions for the care of the poor. Her cult was
approved in 1694.
