medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Writing from memory, I think she was a sort of
PA/confidante - not confessor, I don't think, but this may
be something that varies in time and place. The job is
discussed in Power, Medieval English Nunneries - I can't
think of anything more recent, but no doubt others will
know better. I seem to remember an incident in the c15
Lincoln visitations in which the prioress was reprimanded
for keeping one of her relatives as her chaplain for
several years instead of circulating the job.
Speculatively, it might work as shadowing the prioress and
thus as training for possible successors.
