medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi folks --
I was wondering if anyone could help me with a question for an author
friend. She needs her protagonists to go to a healing shrine circa 1230
AD, and I've been trying to help her find a likely candidate. We turned
up a number of British locales for healing miracles, but she would
prefer something a bit more easterly. I did finally turn up the
following shrine:
Blessed Rasso of Grafrath, OSB (AC)
(also known as Ratho)
Died 953. Count Rasso of Andechs (Bavaria), a man of great stature, was
a brave warrior. He led the Bavarians in several campaigns against the
invading Hungarians. After a midlife pilgrimage to the Holy Land and
Rome, he founded a Benedictine abbey at Wörth (now Grafrath) in Bavaria
where he himself became a monk. Saint Rasso gives his name to the
healing shrine of Grafrath in Bavaria (Attwater2).
Would this be a good candidate? Does anybody know anything about this
shrine or this saint (why his shrine is a healing one, especially)?
Alternatively, can anybody think of a better shrine?
Many, many thanks in advance.
