BOYS AND READING: MEETING THE CHALLENGE
24 January, London
'I find reading boring and I don't have the time. Most stories are on the TV
so I don't really bother now. I would sooner play on my computer.'
These are the words of a twelve year-old boy, confirming many people's worst
fears about boys' reading.
The last few years have seen unprecedented concern about boys' reading.
Influential reports have been published and changes have been made to the
curriculum. What are the implications for libraries? How should library
staff respond to the challenges? Do they have a role in breaking down
stereotypes? How can they promote reading to boys effectively?
