You will find the state of the art described in a Cocharne review on
teaching critical appraisal and in a systematic review using similar methods
we published in Medical Teacher (Ebbert JO, Montori VM, Schultz HJ. The
journal club in postgraduate medical education: a systematic review. Med
Teacher 2001; 23: 455-61). It is clear to me that a randomized trial design
should be the design of choice to assess the planned intervention.
