medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
RE: [M-R] saints of the day 11. November -St. Martin as Patron of
France]Dear List Members,
I'm trying to determine which specific duties were accorded to a medieval
English nun who served as the "chapeleyne" to an abbess or prioress (like
Chaucer's Second Nun). The Middle English Dictionary calls her a "private
secretary" and "assistant" (definition 2b "chapelein") but I wonder if she
could've/would've served as a confessor? perhaps had instructional duties?
If anyone would point me to a work which explores this idea I would be quite
grateful.
With deep thanks,
Karolyn
