medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Colleagues
The theme of next year's Leeds International Medieval Congress (July
8-11, 2002) is 'Exile'. TASC (the Trans-national Database and Atlas of
Saints' Cults) is sponsoring panels of three 20-minute papers each under
the title 'Distant devotions: Patterns of exile and displacement in the
survey of saints' cults'.
Papers are invited which deal with the temporal and geographical
development of cults _de novo_ far from the place of origin of, or the
place(s) associated with, the person or object venerated; or of cults
which became widely diffused beyond their original zones of devotion
(for example, eastern cults such as those of Saints Nicholas, George,
and Catherine which spread far to the west and the north). Papers
dealing with cults which specifically honoured exiled persons, including
the self-exiled (e.g. hermits), would also be most welcome.
Best wishes
Graham
