The Coptic church regards Luke as the first christian iconographer. BVM to Luke
before her Dormition: "Make my portrait for you so that you should never forget
me" (Meinardus, _Christian Egypt..._).
Metaphrastes' _Commentarius in D. Lucam_ (PG CXV) tells us that Luke studied
his medicine in Egypt and returned there to preach in later life. The Syriac
Gospel of Luke claims it was delivered in Alexandria, and the _Constitutiones
Apostolicae_ tells us that Luke consecrated Abilius bishop of Alexandria. This
from Roncaglia, _Histoire de l'eglise Copte_, I, p. 44.
