medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. October) is the feast day of:
Philippos of Heraklea (d. c. 300) We have have a contemporary account of
Philippos' trial. In c. 300 Philippos was bishop of Heraklea (near
Constantinople), imprisoned with his deacon and two priests during the
Great Persecution. When the four men refused to burn their church's books,
they were condemned to death and *they* were burned.
Mellon (d. c. 314) According to a highly legendary vita, Mellon was from
the area of Cardiff, Wales. He was sent by Pope Stephen I in 256 as the
first known bishop of Rouen, after he had been baptized in Rome.
Ingbert (d. c. 650) The city of St. Ingbert in the Saar grew up around the
hermitage of Ingbert. According to tradition Ingbert was active as a
missionary throughout the Saarland.
Nunilo and Alodia (d. 851) Nunilo and Alodia were sisters in Spain
(probably in the region of Huesca, Aragon). They were raised in the
Christian religion by their mother; their father was a Muslim. According
to legend, when their father died, N and A's mother remarried---another
Muslim, who persecuted his stepdaughters on account of their faith and
finally put them in a dungeon. It is certain that N and A were beheaded by
the Moorish authorities in Huesca. Their relics are still venerated in
Sanguesa (Navarre).
Bertharius of Montecassino (blessed) (d. 884) Bertharius was abbot of
Montecassino. He won fame as a poet and author, and also cared for his
monastery (winning an exemption for it in 877). When Saracen raiders
destroyed Montecassino, Bertharius was killed. His cult won official
approbation in 1727.
Donatus Scotus (d. 892) Donatus may have been an Irishman or Scot who went
to the continent as a missionary. He became bishop of Fiesole in 830, and
apparently ruled until c. 880, although his date of death is reported to be
892.
