FURTHER INFORMATION
ICT TRAINING FOR PUBLIC LIBRARY STAFF - ADVANCED ROLES
The NOF ICT training for public library staff should ensure that all staff
achieve a basic level of competence in the use of ICT as set out in the NOF
Expected Outcomes. However, levels of ICT competence between staff can vary
considerably, and those staff who have already achieved the NOF Expected
Outcomes 1 - 8 may wish to pursue the Advanced Roles that offer training
beyond the scope of the Expected Outcomes as follows:
* Information Consultant
* Information Manager
* Information Technology Gatekeeper
* Net Navigator
A full description of the skills required by these new roles is explored in
chapter 11 of the Library and Information Commission's 1998 report 'Building
the New Library Network'
WHY CHOOSE THE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION'S ADVANCED ICT TRAINING FOR PUBLIC
LIBRARIANS?
The Library Association's Public Library Training Programme is approved by
NOF. We offer a wealth of expertise from the library and information sector
and in the delivery of both face-to-face and web-based learning, having
created the following four separate interactive learning packages to meet
training needs: Net Navigator; Information Technology Gatekeeper;
Information Manager and Information Consultant. These programmes have been
developed specifically for public librarians, to reflect current
professional practice and issues in librarianship.
HOW WILL THE PROGRAMME BE DELIVERED?
The key resource will be a practical, hands-on face-to-face training session
with specialist tutors. This can be delivered onsite if the IT facilities
available meet our requirements, and if organisations have a minimum of 10
participants. Alternatively, for those with less than 10 participants,
individuals can attend the training courses that will be delivered at
Library Association headquarters. This comprehensive open learning programme
requires participants to carry out preparatory work prior to the
face-to-face session in addition to follow up activities using a combination
of paper, web resources and software.
THE ADVANCED ROLES WEB SITE
Each participant is allocated a username and password providing access to
the website that has been specifically designed to support public library
staff and their individual ICT needs. Paper-based resources linked to
web-based materials enable participants to quickly and easily access the
relevant data and information, so that time on-line is used effectively. Web
based conferencing and e-mail provide an interactive learning environment
with tutors and other participants.
Authorities have three years access to the learning resources, online
learning support from specialist tutors, plus three years online technical
support from the date the contract is signed.
