DC-2001 starts in one week! I thought I'd jot a few reminder notes for
those travelling to Tokyo in the coming week.
Tokyo is, of course, one of the great cities of the world, and its size
alone can be daunting. Fortunately, it is also among the most civil places
you can find anywhere, so don't be bashful about seeking assistence. In
fact, many visitors find that a perplexed look at a subway sign for more
than a few seconds is enough to trigger unsolicited offers of assistence.
ATM machines are not as common in Japan as they are in Europe or the US, nor
is credit card acceptance universal, so it is a good idea to exchange
currency at the airport upon arrival.
You may want to consult the following guide:

Narita Airport is a long distance from Tokyo, and a Taxi ride from there is
prohibitively expensive. Take the Airport Limo (Bus) or a Train to central
Tokyo. Once you get to Tokyo Station or the Tokyo City Air Terminal, the
adventurous may want to tackle the subway, though these stations are close
enough to the hotels that a Taxi may be the just the thing after a long
journey. For those booked in the Hotel Grand Palace, you can take an
Airport bus that drops you off right at the hotel.
Information on transportation to conference hotels is available at:

Weather in Tokyo in October is generally pleasant and moderate (next
Friday's forecast is for Sunny and 18C/64F.
Safe travelling, all!
