medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
To even things out, from Phyllis who can't remember what day it is (too
many freshman essays!):
Today (4. October) was the feast day of:
Thyrsus and companions. Yet more members of the Theban Legion
Ammun (d. before 356) Ammun was a native of Alexandria in Egypt. He
married and had children, but left them and became a hermit until his
death. He's regarded as the founder of the monastic colony in the Nitrian
Desert.
Petronius (d. 450) Petronius is patron of the city of Bologna. He was
born in c. 380, perhaps in Gaul. As a young man, Petronius journeyed to
the Holy Land, where he visited the ascetics besides the holy places. On
his return journey, he stopped in Bologna, where he became bishop in 431.
In Bologna he began work on the church of S. Stefano, modelled on the
church of the Holy Sepulcher.
Peter of Damascus (d. c. 750) Peter was bishop of Damascus. Tradition
reports that at the order of the caliph he was imprisoned and seriously
mishandled (including blinding and having his tongue ripped out) before
being tied to a cross and finally beheaded.
Francis of Assisi (d. 1226) The tale of Francis is probably familiar to
most list members: conversion to life of absolute poverty, foundation of
one of the first two mendicant orders (as well as the Poor Clares and the
Franciscan tertiaries), first acknowledged recipient of the stigmata.
Francis was canonized with astonishing speed, in 22 months.
