medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. October) is the feast day of:
Maximilian of Lorch (d. 284) According to legend, Maximilian was
originally from Dalmatia. He was given a papal commission, at first as a
wandering bishop in Noricum, then as bishop of Lorch (Austria). He is
supposed to have died as a martyr. There is evidence of a cult of
Maximilian from c. 710 in the area that became Austria, but the titles
"martyr" and "bishop" appear to have been added to the figure only later.
His relics were moved to Altotting in the tenth century, and from there to
Passau, where he is still honored as patron of the bishopric.
Pantalus (4th cent.) Pantalus is supposed to have been bishop of Basel,
although there is no evidence of his existence. One legend reports that he
was the first bishop of Basel, but a Justinianus active in c. 345 has
better claim to that title. Another legend connects Pantalus to St. ursula
and reports that he was martyred with her in Cologne. A skull honored as a
relic of Pantalus reached Basel in the thirteenth century, and Pantalus is
now honored as the second patron of the bishopric of Basel.
Salvinus (d. 562) Salvinus was bishop of Verona in the mid sixth century.
His relics can still be seen in the church of S. Stefano in Verona.
Edwin (d. 633) Edwin was born in 584, and in 616 became king of
Northumbria. His second marriage was to Ethelburga of Kent (the daughter
of Ethelbert of Kent), which led to Edwin's conversion and baptism. After
Edwin was killed in battle against the non-Christian King Penda of Mercia,
the people honored him as a martyr.
Rudolf (d. 1088 or 1089) From 1074 until his death, Rudolf was prior of
the Camaldolese order. He helped strengthen the young order and founded
numerous new monasteries, especially houses for a female branch of the
order.
