medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (29. October) is the feast day of:
Narcissos (d. after 212) Narcissos became bishop of Jerusalem in c. 195,
when he was already a very old man. He was forced from his office for a
time when he sided with Roman practice in the first Easter controversy, but
returned after a few years. He is supposed to have been well over 100
years old when he died.
Honoratus of Vercelli (d. c. 415) Honoratus was born in Vercelli in c.
330, where he was educated by St. Eusebius. He accompanied Eusebius into
exile. In 396 Honoratus was elected bishop of Vercelli, recommended by
Ambrose.
Theudarius (d. c. 575) Theudarius gave away all his possessions, was
ordained as a priest by Caesarius of Arles, and lived the rest of his life
as a hermitin and near Vienne. He was much-visited as a spiritual advisor
and confessor.
Ermelindis (d. c. 590) Ermelindis was the daughter of a noble family of
Brabant, who fled to avoid the marriage her parents had arranged for her.
She became a hermitess near modern Meldaert (Belgium).
Colman of Kilmacduagh (d. c. 632) Colman became a monk at Aranmore and
later lived at Burren (Ireland), where he was unwillingly consecrated as a
bishop. He lived with only one disciple, following a very rigorous
discipline. Colman later founded the monastery of Kilmacduagh. According
to legend, a rooster would wake Colman in time for the night office, a
mouse kept him from going to sleep after it, and a fly would keep his place
in his book.
Merewenna (d. 985) In 967 Merewenna became abbess of the re-founded
nunnery of Romsey in England. The house prospered under her care, and
several princesses became nuns there.
