medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (2. October) is the feast day of:
Leodegar (Lutgar, Leger) of Autun (d. 679) Leodegar was of noble birth,
born in c. 616. He became archdeacon of Poitiers, then abbot of
St.-Maixent near Poitiers, then in 663 bishop of Autun. Leodegar won many
enemies because of his energetic reforms, most notably Ebroin, the mayor of
the palace. Ebroin had L. imprisoned in 676, where our unfortunate saint
was blinded and had his tongue ripped out. Finally he was beheaded at
Ebroin's order.
Warin of Poitou (d. 679) Warin was a brother of Leodegar (see above) and
count of Poitou. Thanks to slander, he was arrested and killed along with
his brother.
Beregis (Bergis) (d. sometime after 725) Beregis was the founding abbot
of the monastery of St-Hubert in the Ardennes.
Thomas of Cantilupe (of Hereford) (d. 1282) Thomas was born to a good
family in Hambledon (England) in c. 1218. He was hghly educated, and in
1262 became chancellor of Oxford; in 1264 he became chancellor of England.
Thomas became bishop of Hereford in 1275. He was noted for his strongly
penitential demeanor and strong sense of justice. Despite this, he was
excommunicated in 1282 because of a quarrel over metropolitan jurisdiction.
Thomas died on his way to appeal to the pope. His remains were returned
to Hereford, and soon attracted many pilgrims. He was canonized in 1320.
Guardian Angels. A special commemoration of the Guardian Angels
(individual spiritual protectors of everybody) was introduced in Austria,
Spain, and Portugal in the fifteenth-sixteenth centuries, both as guardians
of particular regions and of individuals. Clement X made it a universal
feast in 1607, fixing its date to 2. October.
