medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. September) is the feast day of:
Ursicinus of Ravenna (d. 536) Ursicinus became archbishop of Ravenna in
530. The diocese bloomed during his six years in office. Ursicinus is
responsible, among other works, for the construction of the basilica of S.
Apollinare in Classe, where his image can still be seen in the apse mosaic.
Genebaudus of Laon (d. 555) Genebaudus was the first bishop of the diocese
of Laon, founded by St. Remigius. A legend relates that Genebaudus
illicitly married a relative of Remigius' and had two children with her; on
account of this, Remigius imprisoned Genebaudus for seven years.
Bertin (d. 698) Bertin was born in Orval in the kingdom of the Franks in
c. 615. From c. 670 on he was abbot of Sithiu in Flanders, which was later
named St-Bertin after him. He was already venerated as a saint soon after
his death.
