I'm trying to make sense of the poem's structural oddities, and am quite at sea when it comes to [the scholarly literature on] blasphemous swearing. Could anyone offer bibliographical pointers either on preaching against swearing in general, or on the particular foul-mouthedness of the French in the 13th century?
Dear Carin,
Regarding Capetian monarch's detestation of swearing, see John Baldwin's
_Masters, Princes and Merchants_, 1:254. William Chester Jordan's book on Louis IX also covers Louis' close association with the mendicant orders and his aversion to swearing, to the point of passing statutes against blasphemy (particularly that arising from gambling) in preparation for and/or during the campaigns of his crusades. Joinville's _Life of Saint Louis_, available in English translation (by M. R. B. Shaw, Penguin classics) also contains valuable evidence on these topics. I hope that this helps!
Sincerely,
Jessalynn Bird
