medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear list members,
There is a well in York Minster, known as St Peter's
Well. it is situated in the Zouche chapel, added in
the mid fourteenth century to the previous SE
transept, and retained in the later bebuilding of the
choir, i.e. it is outside the walls of the previous
churches on the site. William Zouche was Archbishop of
York 1342-52 and he built the chapel as his chantry.
Adjoining the Zouche chapel to the west are the
minster sacristies, so its purpose may have been
practical rather than devotional.Rather like the
Glasgow and Glastonbury examples it is in the
thickness of the wall, in this case the south wall of
the chapel.
