A key difficulty with this suggestion is that not all readers of this list
use Windows machines, and thus the accented letters will not always be
properly represented. Your 0227, for example, appears on my screen as a
double comma, and your 0228 as some species of percent symbol.
Those who wish to include accents so that they'll appear correctly
cross-platform might consider following the editorial guidlines of the Bryn
Mawr Classical Review, found at:
<http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/bmcr/review.html>
In fact, an apology of the sort made in the posting which inspired John
Hall's suggestion is not even necessary, since the most recent welcome
message (Version 3.0) for [M-R] includes the following:
<<It is recommended to send the text of your message as plain text without
special formatting and without special characters, to make sure that it can
be decoded correctly by the many different e-mail systems used by the
several hundred members of this list.>>
While not entirely explicit as to what count as "special characters,"
1995's Version 1 of the same document more clearly states:
<<Given practical computing problems, omission of accents is acceptable
(and will not be considered a sign of scholarly sloppiness).>>
While I deplore the fact that umlauts and accents were considered "special
characters" by the computer engineers who decided such matters, in
practical terms it's true.
