medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The Latin name used for the medieval monastery at Reichenau is _Augia
Dives_. Since Reichenau itself means "abundant [reiche] island [au]", and
since the Latin _dives_ means "abundant", I presume that _augia_ means
"island" or something along those lines -- especially given the
too-close-to-be-concidence similarity of _au_ and _augia_. However,
desoite looking through several dictionaries of both classical and medieval
Latin, such as the Oxford Latin Dictionary and Niemeyer, I can find no
entry for _augia_. Can anyone provide me with the meaning of _augia_, plus
perhaps a guess as to why it seems so difficult to find?
