Here in Greater Manchester the only time I charge is when I have to
send out SMR data to commercial enquirers - this is to cover my time
and the current rate is £50/hour. There is no charge for public or
research enquiries. I always encourage consultants and other
commercial users to come to my office to look at the SMR data and
supporting files - and for this there is no charge. I believe it is
important to speak to them to pass on my knowledge of the area in
which they are interested, particularly with regard to the quality of
the SMR for that area and the way in which it has been compiled. It
also gives me an opportunity to discuss the potential of the
archaeology, the character and likely impact of the proposed
development, and possible mitigation (pending further research). I
guess that around 90% of commercial enquirers do come to the SMR
office.
