i think RI Moore's characterization of the papal reform (esp under Gregory)
as functional donatism is good. they were careful not to slip over
formally, but they certainly flirted with it, and, in calling on layfolk to
boycott the masses of nicolaites and simoniacs, they certainly gave the
donatist attitude a great deal of credibility. when you get right down to
it, any serious reform movt has to flirt with donatism.
i think it's well worth asking the question, whatever the formal position
of the reforming clergy, how did the enthusiastic lay populace hear it?
(eg, i think the patarenes were donatists)
