medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (24. September) is the feast day of:
Chuniald and Gislar (1st half 8th cent.) Chuniald and Gislar were priests
and companions of St. Rupert of Salzburg, who became the first bishop of
Salzburg in c. 700. Together they evangelized the region around Salzburg.
Virgil of Salzburg (d. 784) One of the very few canonized saints from
Ireland, Virgil was born in Ireland in c. 700. In 743 he came to Bavaria,
and was given governance of the bishopric of Salzburg by Duke Odilo. At
first Virgil led the diocese from his position as abbot of St. Peter's, but
from 755 on as bishop. Virgil was active in support of missionary work in
Carinthia, and also had a considerable reputation as a scholar.
Ysarnus (d. 1043) Ysarnus spent the last 22 years of his life as abbot of
St. Victor in Marseille, making the monastery flourish.
Gerhard of Csanad (d. 1046) Gerhard was of Venetian blood and is first
known as abbot of the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio in Venice. On
the course of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Gerhard became acquainted with
King Stephen of Hungary, who made Gerhard the tutor of Prince Emmerich. In
1030 Gerhard became bishop of Csanad and is responsible for organizing that
diocese. In the course of a pagan revolt, Gerhard was stoned to death in
Buda in 1046. His remains were returned to Csanad in 1053, and he was
canonized in 1083.
Hermannus Contractus (d. 1054) Hermann "the Lame" was never formally
canonized, but is traditionally regarded as "blessed." Hermann was a
quadriplegic, given as a child to the monastery of Reichenau. With the
help of the monastic community, he became one of the most learned people of
his age, producing both religious and historical texts. Despite his
handicap, he was also ordained as a priest.
