medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Also, since the new (general Roman) calendar of 1969, Vincent dePaul is
celebrated on this date, the anniversary of his death (1660). In the
previous calendar, he was celebrated on 19 July, the translation of his
relics.

> Today (27. September) is the feast day of:
>
> Zenas (1st cent.) According to one tradition, Zenas was a disciple of St.
> Paul. Another, probably legendary tradition, makes him one of Jesus' 72
> disciples.

> Epicharis (d. c. 300) In legend, Epicharis was the wife of a Roman
> senator, who was executed in Diocletian's persecution.
>
> Florentinus, Hilarius, and Aphrodisius (d. perhaps early 5th cent.) An
> uncertain tradition makes Florentinus a bishop, Hilarius a deacon, and
> Aphrodisius their companion. The three are supposed to have been
martyred,
> perhaps in Burgundy.
>
> Barry (Barnic, Barruc) (5th/6th cent.) Barry was a hermit who lived,

> site.
>
> Sigebert (d. 635) Sigebert was the first Christian king of East Anglia.
> Before that, he was banished to the kingdom of the Franks by his brother,
> the reigning king, and was baptized and educated while abroad. When
> Sigbebert became king himself in 631 he worked to spread Christianity in
> his kingdom. Sigebert soon abdicated and became a monk, but was forced to
> take part in a battle against the neighboring King Penda (Sigebert refused

> completely defeated and Sigebert was killed. Since the enemy was
> non-Christian, he is regarded as a martyr.
>
> Elzear of Sabran (d. 1323) Elzear was born in 1285/1286 in Provence. He

> were strongly influenced by Franciscan thought and became tertiaries of
the

> born in Rippafratta (Tuscany) in c. 1375. He became a Dominican friar in
> Pisa and became a noted preacher and teacher (his students included
> Antoninus and Giovanni of Fiesole).
