A reader has asked us if there are any collections which hold the
larger John Wood plan of Dalkeith 1822. He has a copy which is larger
than ours - his copy has about 10cm extra map to the bottom, and about
1cm extra on the left. Unfortunately his copy is trimmed and has lost
three of the neatlines, so the exact dimensons are not clear. It
seems that there could have been even more information on the left, so
he would like to find a collection with the whole map in the larger
size.
Close inspection of NLS's copy of the map (which is in the atlas)
shows that the plate was originally larger and there are traces of
lines having been hammered out. We assume that the map was first
issued separately in a larger size and then the copper plate was cut,
hammered and re-engraved with new neatlines, to make the map fit
better in the 1828 atlas.
Could you check your copies to see if any are the larger version? An
easy way to check is to look beside the margin at the bottom left. In
the uncropped version it states <Seed Shop>; in the cropped version it
just states <Shop>, as Seed has been removed. Also in the larger
version the river has <New Mills> in the bottom right; the smaller
version stops at <Snuff and Spinning mills>.
Many thanks
