medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. August) is the feast day of:
Privatus (d. 257) Privatus was bishop of Mende in France. When the
Alamanni raided in 257 he refused to reveal where the Christians of his
community had taken refuge, and was killed.
Quadratus (d. 259) In the mid third century Quadratus was bishop of Utica
in North Africa. In the persecutions of Valerian, he was first banished
and then in 259 executed.
Luxorius (d. c. 303) Luxorius was a Roman soldier from Sardinia. He was
beheaded in Diocletian's persecution. He is honored in his native land as
Santu Lussurgiu, and in Tuscany as San Rossore.
Sidonius Apollinaris (d. c. 480) Sidonius Apollinaris was one of the last
Gaulish bishops with a comprehensive classical education. He was born in
c. 425 in Lyon to a Christian family. On reaching adulthood, Sidonius at
first went into politics, in c. 450 marrying the daughter of the later
emperor Avitus, and rising in rank to count of the Auvergne and prefect of
Rome. In c. 469 he withdrew to his country estates. A few months later he
was elected bishop of Clermont-Ferrand---against his will and despite his
lay status. His time in office was notable both for pastoral care and
diplomacy in a very uncertain age. Immediately after his death he was
venerated as a saint. Many of his letters and poems are still extant.
Bernardo Tolomei (Ptolemaeus) (blessed) (d. 1348) Bernardo Tolomei was
born in 1272 in Siena. In 1319 he founded in the diocese of Arezzo the
monastery of Our Lady of Monte Oliveto, from which the Benedictine reform
congregation of the Olivetans developed. He was abbot until his death.
Bernardo's cult was approved in 1681.
