medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hello. I'm Pip Patrick, I am a palaeopathologist from the Institute of
Archaeology in London, and I specialise in health and lifestyle in
medieval monastic communities... but more of that sometime in the
future...

My supervisor (Tony Waldron: palaeopathologist/palaeoepidemiologist)
believes that the 1348 Black Death cannot have been bubonic plague - it
doesn't make sense epidemiologically. 40% or so of the population of
London died in the 1348 epidemic; but bubonic plague only has a case
fatality rate of about 5%. He believes it is more likely that it was
*pneumonic* plague, which has a much higher case fatality (nearer to
90%, I seem to recall), and is more contagious.
