medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
surnames in rural areas up to c.15 were often given as 'de la [physical
feature]' - but I suspect this 'de la' is an artefact of the process by
which the name was recorded. Some people hung on to it though and I've
occasionally wondered why. Just like the capital letter at the front it
gets into all the documents but you might not necessarily hear it in
practise!
