medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. August) is the feast day of:
Euplus of Catania (d. 304) Euplus was highly honored in the early Middle
Ages in Italy and especially Sicily, where many churches were dedicated to
him. According to a very early account, Euplus voluntarily surrendered
himself to the governor of Sicily as a Christian, and died of torture
during the process against him.
Hilaria (d. 304) The mother of St. Afra of Augsburg, Hilaria was baptized
at the same time as her daughter, and was also killed by burning to death
during Diocletian's persecution.
Quiriacus of Augsburg (d. 304) According to legend, Quiriacus was martyred
along with Afra and her mother Hilaria in Diocletian's persecution.
Murtagh (6th cent.?) Murtagh was an Irish bishop, according to varying
traditions either a convert of Patrick or a contemporary of Columcille
(probably the latter). He is regarded as the first bishop of Killala and
as the founder of the monastery of Innismurray.
Waldetrud (Waltraud) (d. 688) Waldetrud was married to Vincentius of
Madelgar (also regarded as a saint). They produced four children (2 also
considered saints), all of whom entered the monastic life upon parental
advice, as did Waldetrud and Vincentius. Waldetrud founded the nunnery of
Castrilocus (modern Mons) in Belgium, leading it as abbess until her death.
Porcarius (d. 732) Porcarius was abbot of the monastery of Lerins in
southern France. On this day in 732 Saracens overran the monastery and
killed all 500 monks (at least according to tradition); only the houngest
survived, because Porcarius had sent them to a place of safety in time.
